Archive of preliminary documents, see: notes, sketches, drafts, maps and sheet music. Take such graphic scripts as storyboards for interpretation. Understand by “note” any document whether digital, typed or manuscript. Understand by “sketch” any preparatory document that contains a sketched idea. Understand by “rough draft” any provisional documentation that precedes the work but is not the final work. Take the terminology “note” detached from its character of registration. Take the terminology “map” detached from its documentary condition. Take the terminology “score” according to the French etymology of “partition” that is point of departure, start. Note that here the “score” is not limited by the use of musical language and that the “map” is neither from its use of the cartographical or architectural language. Understand both terms as any abstract writing, emancipated from the visual and sonic reality that describes a spatial and temporal development.
Note that this archive does not pretend to question the categories “work” and “document”. Here, the document eventually takes the place of the work but it is not a final “work”. Avoid considering that the exhibited document insinuates that there might not be a place for the work. This archive is not conditioned by a productive aspect of conceptual art nor does it questions whether it would be necessary to perform the work as described in each document or if on the contrary that document suffices on its own. Understand that in any case the document is not autonomous but clearly declared as preliminary, accessory, functional, or in other terms, that it precisely needs a posterior state.
Considering that the documents do not matter as objects but as factors (from latin: facere “to do”) the archive is not subject to material survival. Consider indistinct an original document and its photocopy, both format adjust to the purpose of the archive.
