More about The Garden of the Free Zone
Site specific and installation The Sharjah Biennal 11. EAU. 2013
Several old and obsolete objects that were collected from storage places – from the basement of the Culture Department of Sharjah in the Free Zone and the bank building – come back to life during the time of the Biennial, occupying the top floor of an old and abandoned bank building from which one can have a view of the city of Sharjah. This operation activates both the space and elements of the work in the form of a garden. This project has a very specific and ephemeral nature, as once the Biennial finishes the objects will be returned to their original place, therefore abandoning the status of art. The garden is intended to constitute an art event rather than a final work insofar as its elements are taken as art only within the context of the installation. This way, the objects are arranged and organized in order to create a symbolic map that refers to the use and memory of the institution’s daily activity that they inhabit.
