More about Nerja Once

Once a sleepy fishing village, the town now has a population of over 22,000. Nerja’a population swells to about 90,000 in the summer…it has almost no history until tourism hit.

It is not uncommon in the tourist literature the allusion to these incredible somersaults of the “fishing village ” to a “touristic center”, from a dateless past , eternal, timeless and permanently anchored in a stillness which only wakes up to the click of cameras, this obsessive fantasy mirage responds to the tourist ilusion of  “discovery” of the “unknown” place , “hidden” , “virgin beaches ” etc… and denotes the persistence of a topical colonial dream: paradise living ignorant of their own condition to be discovered by a subject able to understand it in its true dimension, that is, a subject culturally superior, always belonging to the same world as understood that the object in question, only set in a stadium of more advanced evolution – also as a single type, a unique mode of development. The emphasis in this décalage seeks to highlight the temporal contrast between two times, between two points in history, a history unique itinerary, in which only differences would be recognized chronological grade. One place is the product of an imagination that not only appeals to the memory, but entails a good deal of fable. And that, in its tourist vocation, becomes the expression of a collective remembrance composed of multiple links between the deep past and a quick, fleeting present, a place that does not always know where it comes from and what happens around him and below it.

 

 

Nerja Once was produced for the exhibition “Tour- isms. The Defeat of Dissent” (Fundaciò Tàpies. Barcelona, ​​2004) is configured as a dating network, woven from theoretical texts, historical research, photographic archives, newspaper and propaganda film. The exhibition should be valued as a valuable information repository: postcards, film and television fiction and commercial advertising or documents produced by individuals  originally intended for domestic consumption.
