LiMAC is proud to present A Clear Unreality the first painting retrospective of Croatian born and Pervuian based artist Dare Dovidjenko. The exhibition is divided into three rooms and includes 51 works from the late 80´s up until today, in which landscapes, antiquity architecture and a puzzling irony are constant themes.

In the first space we are exposed to paintings located at the crossroads of polarized situations between humor and seriousness that reveal unnoticed sides of daily life and popular culture.

The second space is dedicated to Dovidjenko´s hometown of Split, where the Diocletian palace, built in 305, maintains itself alive in the center of the city. The works appear to flirt with a certain kind of hyperrealist anachronism that captures the stoic permanence of roman architecture and the ephemeral reflection of light in the sea.

In the third and final room, landscapes of pre-Inca ruins of Pachácamac in Lima´s desert link with lush nature scenes from the Amazon rainforest. The void within the architecture of antique empires contrasts with the dense flora still populated by autochthonous communities. Using the topography of Peru, Dovidjenko reflects upon the inaccessibility of past and present stories. Paradoxically, the minute realism of his paintings drives us towards a clear unreality.

Dovidjenko´s work is guided by a discipline that goes beyond trends. As an indoor and outdoors easel painter that uses photography and nature as a model to exhaustively copy reality, his paintings bring us at the border of realism where the appearance of daily life distorts itself. This is how he enlarges the dimensions of landscape, moving itself between the columns of empires, the illusions of Piranesi and the brushstrokes of impressionism. Far from the quicksands of modernism, Dovidjenko brings the viewer towards a concrete surrealism.
